 9 COMMON DENTAL MYTHS

When it comes to dental health, misinformation spreads faster than cavities on Halloween. From home remedies to old wives’ tales, many of us believe things about our teeth that simply aren’t true, and that can lead to bad habits or even avoiding the dentist altogether. It’s time to set the record straight! Here are 10 common dental myths your dentist really wishes you knew the truth about:

  1. DENTAL EXTRACTION AFFECTS THE EYE OR BRAIN – About the Brain:

No. Dental extraction do not cause any brain damage. This is pure fear-based misinformation. The teeth and brain have completely separate blood supplies and nerve systems, protected by strong bones like the skull and maxilla. A routine tooth extraction cannot affect brain function or structure. About Eye: No. Dental extractions do not cause blurred vision, blindness, or any permanent eye problems. Any mild discomfort near the eye is temporary and due to post-operative swelling or shared nerve pathways.

  2. IF MY TEETH DON’T HURT, THEY MUST BE HEALTHY-

Truth: Dental issues like cavities, gum disease, and even infections can exist without pain — until it’s too late. That’s why regular checkups are crucial. Prevention is always cheaper (and easier) than treatment.
  3. BRUSHING HARDER MEANS CLEANER TEETH –

Truth: Scrubbing too hard can actually damage your enamel and irritate your gums. Use a soft-bristled brush and gentle, circular motions. Think massage, not power wash.

  4. BABY TEETH DON’T MATTER THEY’LL JUST FALL OUT ANYWAY-

Truth: Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth. If they’re lost too early due to decay, it can lead to crowding and orthodontic issues later on.

  5. SUGAR IS THE ONLY THING THAT CAUSES CAVITIES-

Truth: Sugar plays a major role, but it’s not the only culprit. Acidic foods, poor oral hygiene, and dry mouth can all contribute. Even “healthy” snacks like dried fruit can be cavity-causing if they stick to your teeth.
  6. WHITENING RUINS YOUR TEETH-

Truth: When done properly—either professionally or with approved at-home kits—whitening is safe. Overuse or DIY hacks (like lemon juice and baking soda!) can, however, damage enamel.
  7. CHARCOAL TOOTHPASTE IS A NATURAL WAY TO WHITEN TEETH-

Truth: Charcoal is abrasive and can wear down enamel over time. There’s limited evidence it whitens teeth effectively, and it may even stain older restorations. Always check with your dentist before trying new trends.
  8. YOU ONLY NEED TO SEE THE DENTIST WHEN SOMETHING’S WRONG-

Truth: Waiting for pain or visible problems often means you’re catching things too late. Regular cleanings and checkups can catch small issues before they become big (and expensive) ones.
  9. GUM BLEEDING IS NORMAL-

Truth: Bleeding gums are often a sign of gingivitis or early gum disease. It’s not normal, and it’s not something to ignore. The good news? It’s treatable when caught early!
